A SMALL CIRCLE OF FRIENDS 1980
U.S. film. Set during the turbulent years from 1967 into the early '70s,
A Small Circle of Friends traces how three Harvard and Radcliffe students; Leo, Jessica, and Nick, are shaped as much by the political climate as by their feelings for one another.
Leo begins as a charismatic rebel, drawn to causes as much for the thrill as the principle. Jessica, an art student, arrives with a mix of ambition and idealism, open to new experiences. Nick, a pre-law student, is the more reserved and conventional of the trio, initially wary of radicalism but slowly pulled into the decade's political and social upheaval.
The anti-war movement becomes a crucible for their identities. Leo's activism escalates from campus protests to more dangerous, underground activities. Jessica, caught between her romantic feelings and her growing political convictions, navigates the era's changing expectations of women; experimenting with communal living and challenging traditional roles. Nick's arc reflects the conflict of those who straddled two worlds; outwardly committed to the establishment through his legal studies, yet increasingly sympathetic to the anti-war cause as he witnesses the draft's toll on friends and classmates.
By the film's final act, the optimism of their early student years has given way to disillusionment, much like the national mood as the Vietnam War dragged on and the counterculture splintered. Many well-crafted scenes depicting campus life, parties, 60s rock and roll, and war protests.
