Loves of a Blonde is an important example of the Czech New Wave cinema, a film style which took advantage of a short-lived relaxation of authoritarian control and enabled filmmakers to make subtle, yet incisive, critiques of social and political circumstances behind the Iron Curtain. The film effectively uses a mostly non-professional cast, relying on dialogue improvisation, and utilizing documentary-style cinematographic techniques.

In an era of Soviet control over…everything, a shoe factory supervisor belatedly realizes that due to an oversight in central state planning, women at the factory outnumber men 16 to 1. The significant gender disparity is ruining morale and shoe productivity, so he requests that an army officer organize military maneuvers near the town so the factory can sponsor a big dance, at which the girl workers can find male companionship among the soldiers. "They need what we needed when we were young," he explains to a sympathetic officer.

Equal parts humorous and poignant, the film follows shoe factory worker Andula and her experiences leading up to, during and after the dance. Fantastic window into living under a totalitarian regimen while still wanting to be young and have fun.
