U.S. TV show. Host: Ellis Haizlip. Part 1 of a conversation with author James Baldwin and Nikki Giovanni. James Baldwin is interviewed by the young black poetess Nikki Giovanni in a special two-part presentation of Soul!, taped in London. James Baldwin was an American novelist, playwright, essayist, poet, and activist who left America because of its racial prejudice and settled in France. Nikki Giovanni is an American poet, writer, commentator, activist, and educator. Their intriguing conversation focuses on the emergence of strong black voices in America and the roles and responsibilities of blacks in society. Especially illuminating is their discussion on religion and how whites and blacks interpret God differently.

U.S. TV show. Host: Ellis Haizlip. Guests: Singer Bill Withers, poetess Mae Jackson, and jazz by the McCoy Tyner Quartet. Poetess Mae Jackson reads from her own works. Featured guest Bill Withers sings: "Ain't No Sunshine," "I'm Her Daddy," "Grandma's Hands," "Grits Ain't Groceries," and "Summer Night in Harlem." Bill Withers is interviewed and discusses how he got involved in music at the late age of 30 and how record companies wanted to pigeonhole him into an R&B act with horns and female singers. Bill Withers' band includes: Bernorce Blackman, Melvin Dunlap, James Gadson, and Mike Stokes.

SOUL! - January 5, 1972
U.S. TV show. Host: Nikki Giovanni. Guests: Former heavyweight boxing champion Muhammad Ali, singer Miriam Makeba, and vocal group the Delfonics, dancer Judy Deering. Poetess Nikki Giovanni recites "Kidnap Poem." The Delfonics sing: "Trying to Make a Fool of Me" and "Didn't I (Blow Your Mind This Time)." Miriam Makeba sings four songs, including "Brand New Day." Miriam Makeba is interviewed and discusses her civil-rights activist, Black Panther Party leader-husband, Stokely Carmichael and that the difference between South Africa and the United States is slight; in South Africa they admit who they are. (!) Muhammad Ali discusses ABC Wide World of Sports, Howard Cosell, fatherhood, his family and more.
