THE LIFE AND TIMES OF ALLEN GINSBERG 1993
U.S. documentary. This film chronicles the life of American beat poet Allen Ginsberg. Born and raised in New Jersey, Ginsberg attended Columbia University alongside fellow beats Jack Kerouac and William S. Burroughs. Ginsberg ascended to the forefront of the American counterculture following the success of his iconic poem "Howl" in 1955, after which he became involved in activism and spiritualism.

Ginsberg discusses his mother's mental illness and how it affected him, and how it created his sympathy for "people in trouble." He says he inherited a kind of "poetic paranoia." The film also presents interviews with other Beat writers including William Burroughs and Herbert Huncke. Jack Keroac and Neal Cassidy are discussed. Ginsberg talks about what they all contributed to the group and how they would all meet at Foster's Cafeteria.

There are also interview clips with Abbie Hoffman, Joan Baez (who called Ginsberg colorful but serious), Ken Kesey and Timothy Leary.
