SAINT MISBEHAVIN' - THE WAVY GRAVY STORY
U.S. documentary. If you saw the 1970 Woodstock film, or listened to the 3-LP set, you have seen and heard Wavy Gravy. Hired to provide security at Woodstock (the "Please" Force), Wavy proved to be an iconic figure both visually and audially.

Born Hugh Romney in 1936, Wavy began his career in the cafes and clubs of Greenwich Village in the early 1960s, performing poetry and stand-up comedy and opening shows for such musicians as John Coltrane, Thelonious Monk and Peter, Paul & Mary, and others. He briefly roomed with Bob Dylan, who supposedly wrote the lyrics for "A Hard Rain is Gonna Fall" on Wavy's typewriter. He found his way to California where he joined up with Ken Kesey's Merry Pranksters to form a commune known as the Hog Farm.

Eventually foregoing his artistic aspirations in favor of social activism, he became a figure at anti-war protests, donning a clown outfit to avoid beatings by the police. Since then he has been active in charitable causes, including organizing benefit concerts featuring his all-star gallery of friends and founding a performing arts camp for children dubbed Camp Winnarainbow.

A highlight is footage of a 1970 bus ride from Germany to Nepal featuring hippies interacting with Afghan tribes. Warning: this film might be hazardous to your cynicism!

Plus this bonus selection...

THE MAZE - HAIGHT ASHBURY 1967
U.S. TV documentary. "Some call Haight-Ashbury another bohemia, like the Left Bank, Greenwich Village and others. But it's more like Brigadoon: a magical land that appeared only yesterday and may be gone tomorrow. But if it lasts, the effect on the rest of society could be far reaching. And that's why the outside world must try to understand what is happening here." Included are scenes of the Psychedelic Bookshop, the Print Mint and more. Also footage of The Grateful Dead relaxing inside their house at 710 Ashbury Street and a walking tour through the neighborhood.
