A joyous and deeply informative documentary that explores the electrifying world of gospel quartets and their undeniable influence on rhythm & blues and rock & roll. Amazing archival footage and insightful interviews highlight how 1940s-1960s gospel groups pioneered the stage presence, vocal harmonies, and rhythmic intensity that would come to define rock & roll.

The film reveals how artists like Sam Cooke, Ray Charles, and James Brown all had their musical roots in gospel, using its energy and showmanship to transform popular music forever.

One of the film's highlights is its incredible vintage footage, much of it rarely seen, showcasing these gospel groups at their peak. Groups include: The Soul Stirrers (which once featured Sam Cooke), The Dixie Hummingbirds, The Blind Boys of Alabama, The Sensational Nightingales, The Mighty Clouds of Joy, The Fairfield Four, and Sister Rosetta Tharpe; the godmother of rock & roll herself, seen shredding her electric guitar with pure gospel fire.

Standout songs include "Touch the Hem of His Garment" (Sam Cooke & The Soul Stirrers), "Up Above My Head" (Sister Rosetta Tharpe), and "I Can See Everybody's Mother But Mine" (The Dixie Hummingbirds).
