This witty, made-for-TV French documentary profiles one of France's most notorious cultural icons. Gainsbourg (1928-1991) lived his life in full public view; on stage, in newspapers, in sultry music videos, and on countless talk shows, yet remained a charismatic, chain-smoking mystery. To some, the pop songwriter and singer embodied postwar liberation and artistic daring; to others, he was a shameless provocateur with a weakness for beautiful women and strong drink.

Told largely through the affectionate recollections of women who knew him best; Brigitte Bardot, Jane Birkin, Juliette Gréco, Vanessa Paradis, and his daughter Charlotte, this film surveys the contradictions of a man equal parts charm and controversy. His voice, sometimes smooth, sometimes ragged, is as evasive as it is hypnotic, revealing little yet hinting at everything.

Iconic moments include his sizzling romance with Bardot, his enduring creative and personal partnership with Birkin, and their infamous duet, "Je t'aime... moi non plus," banned in several countries for its erotic lyrics, such as, "Je vais et je viens, entre tes reins" ("I go and I come, between your loins").

Beyond scandal, Gainsbourg was a prolific and gifted songwriter, crafting hits for himself and others. His sharp wit, intoxicating presence, and fearless disregard for convention ensured that whether adored or condemned, he was never ignored.
