THE BYRDS - UNDER REVIEW
The Byrds Under Review is a documentary film which provides in-depth analysis of the music, career and background of one of America's most significant bands. There are no complete video performances but that doesn't take away from the value of this film. Although the Byrds principal members did not participate in the production, there is still much intriguing information to be gleaned.
With the support of many who were there at the time, as either part of the group, or associates, this documentary is a celebration of the Byrds' music and legacy. It includes rare and classic performances re-assessed by a panel of experts, live and studio recordings of Byrds classics, footage and interviews from then and now, and exclusive and extensive contributions from Byrds members John York and Gene Parsons. Also contributing and providing analysis and commentary are: Johnny Rogan, Nigel Williamson, Anthony De Curtis, Van Dyke Parks, Bryon Berline, and Vern Gosdin.
The Byrds Under Review begins with Roger McGuinn's folk, banjo playing days and includes rare clips. Many inside stories are shared such as Sonny & Cher secretly recording a Byrds show at Ciro's nightclub on Sunset Boulevard
then rush-recording a Byrds-esque, jangle guitar rock version of Bob Dylan's "All I Really Want To Do." The unique thing about the Byrds is how their style changed over the years from folk-rock, to psychedelic rock, to country rock and to pure country music. If you're looking for a lot of interviews with band members you won't find that here. But, if you want to understand the effect the Byrds had on the 1960's-70's music scene, there is a wealth of detailed information.
