BRAZILIAN TROPICALIA REVOLUTION, THE 2001
French TV documentary. Color. No watermark. Tropicalia was a movement in Brazilian music that stands out because it was both a witness and a participant in Brazilian history. The movement was brief (Nov. 1967 to Dec. 1968) but its effects were lasting. Tropicalia was a new sound that fused traditional Brazilian folk and samba with influences of the Beatles, psychedelic rock and protest lyrics that confronted the military coup-established political power structure.

Many of the artists paid a personal price for speaking out. Artists including Gilberto Gil, Tom Ze, Os Mutantes, Gal Costa and Caetano Veloso played major roles in the movement, and they appear here in 1960s performance footage and late 1990s interviews. Musically fascinating and historically significant.

BRASIL BRASIL! TROPICALIA REVOLUTION 2007
U.K. TV documentary. Color. The rise of the late 1960s Tropicalia movement was a counter-culture reaction to Brazil's military hardliners who seized control of the government. The program chronicles the careers of the Tropicalia stars, from Os Mutantes to Gilberto Gil and Caetano Veloso, both of whom were jailed and exiled to Britain (look for never-before seen footage of them performing at the Isle of Wight festival).

The military censorship campaign against such leading musicians as Chico Buarque, Milton Nascimento, and even Jorge Ben is discussed. And it shows how black musicians in Bahia state responded by developing new, and often militant black styles like samba-reggae.
