ATLANTIC RECORDS 2007
U.S. documentary.
The House That Ahmet Built begins with Atlantic's roots in rhythm & blues and its early commitment to recording and promoting Black American music at a time when it was largely ignored or marginalized by the mainstream record industry.
Founded in New York City by Ahmet Ertegun, Atlantic grew out of a deep respect for R&B, blues, and jazz, working closely with Black artists and producers to capture music as it was being played in clubs, studios, and communities during the late 1940s and 1950s. The film uses archival footage, photographs, and interviews to ground Atlantic's story in the postwar musical landscape.
The House That Ahmet Built shows how Atlantic's R&B foundation shaped everything that followed, including its expansion into soul and rock & roll. The film presents Atlantic not as a corporate brand, but as a music-first operation driven by relationships, shared passion, and a genuine belief in the artists it recorded. Rooted in Black musical traditions, Atlantic's early years set the tone for a label that would leave a lasting mark on American popular music. Interviews include Ahmet Ertegun, Jerry Wexler, Tom Dowd, Jerry Leiber, Mike Stoller, Ray Charles, Ruth Brown, Ben E. King, Solomon Burke, Aretha Franklin, Keith Richards, Jimmy Page, many others.
