THE KAREN CARPENTER STORY 1989
U.S. TV movie. The troubled life of a pop-music star. In 1970, the Carpenters struck gold with a No. 1 hit called, "Close To You." Yet as dramatized in this 1989 TV-movie, success does not come overnight to Karen Carpenter (Cynthia Gibb) or her older brother Richard (Mitchell Anderson). It takes five years for the duo to perfect the multi-track recording style that showcases Karen's pure alto voice and Richard's talents as an arranger, pianist and backing vocalist.

Even then, career pressures contribute to serious health problems. Richard becomes addicted to a prescription sedative, while Karen develops anorexia nervosa—a life-threatening eating disorder. Soon Karen's struggle to control her illness begins to manifest itself in a longing and melancholy in her music. Richard Carpenter produced the film, which features 27 original Carpenter recordings on the soundtrack.

Louise Fletcher, Peter Michael Geotz, Lise Hiboldt, Michael McGuire, Scott Burkholder, Josh Cruze, John Patrick Reger, Richard Minchenberg, William Tucker.
