EGGSHELLS 1969
U.S. film. Excellent quality. 16:9 aspect ratio. Tobe Hooper's debut feature, Eggshells (1969), is less concerned with conventional storytelling than with capturing a moment in the 1960s American youth counterculture. Set in a communal house occupied by free-spirited hippies in Austin, Texas, the film blends documentary-style realism with experimental fantasy as its residents debate politics, relationships, art, and the changing world around them. Beneath the house lurks a mysterious supernatural presence, while kaleidoscopic imagery, anti-war demonstrations, communal living, and trippy psychedelic sequences create a late 1960s midnight movie experience.
One of the film's greatest strengths is its soundtrack, drawn directly from Austin's underground music scene rather than commercial pop hits. The score was composed largely by Spencer Perskin, leader of the psychedelic rock group Shiva's Headband, with additional music by Jim Schulman. Shiva's Headband was the house band at Austin's legendary Vulcan Gas Company, the city's premier psychedelic music venue, and were contemporaries of the 13th Floor Elevators and The Conqueroo.
Rather than featuring polished concert performances, Eggshells uses Shiva's Headband's loose, hypnotic music to enhance its dreamlike atmosphere. The experimental score perfectly complements Hooper's floating visual effects and psychedelic imagery, creating an authentic snapshot of Austin's vibrant underground music and counterculture scene at the end of the 1960s. Mahlon Foreman, Ron Barnhart, Amy Lester, Kim Henkel, Pamela Craig, Jim Schulman, Allen Danziger.

THE HEISTERS 1964
Tobe Hooper's first completed narrative film, a short slapstick comedy about three thieves on the run whose heist quickly descends into chaos as they turn against each other for the treasure they’ve stolen. Influenced by silent film comedians and The Three Stooges, the short showcases Hooper's early talent for visual storytelling, inventive sight gags, and energetic filmmaking years before he became famous for The Texas Chain Saw Massacre.
