THE GIRL HE LEFT BEHIND 1956
U.S. film. Andy (Tab Hunter) is a rich spoiled brat who stays in college only to avoid the draft. Susan (Natalie Wood) is a cute, hard working, responsible girl who, for the time being, is in love with hunky Andy. They live in Burlingame, California.
After Andy causes Susan to miss a class when he wrecks her car in an accident, she wonders if he will ever be mature enough to get married. She returns his fraternity pin. Troubled by their breakup, Andy flunks one of his final exams and loses his Army deferred status. Oops!
Soon after, Andy is drafted. While settling into his barracks at Fort Ord, California he refuses to conform to regulations, disrespects his superiors, and displays a constant attitude of sulky rebellion. Capt. Genaro and Sgts. Clyde and Hanna, his superior officers who embrace the ideals of the "new" Army, are strict and gruffly address the recruits, believing that discipline instills responsibility.
Recognizing Andy's problem as "acute motheritis," Genaro has faith that the Army will help him grow up—and in time Andy goes from pompous ass to responsible soldier and young adult. Suitably impressed Susan takes him back and it appears a happy ending is in store for the young couple.
A stellar cast and excellent photography and acting make for a pleasurable slice of 1956 movie enjoyment! Tab Hunter, Natalie Wood, Jessie Royce Landis, Jim Backus, Henry Jones, Murray Hamilton, Alan King, James Garner, David Janssen, Brett Halsey.
