UP THE JUNCTION 1967
U.K. film. "What's a nice girl like you doing in a place like this?" Polly, an upper-class Chelsea girl decides to relieve the boredom of her plush lifestyle by slumming in a working-class section of London called Battersea.
She takes a job in a sweet factory and soon makes friends with her co-workers Rube and Sylvie. Polly soon discovers the seedy side of life when Rube becomes pregnant and, due to abortion being illegal, accompanies Rube to see a back-street abortionist.
Polly's social climb-down becomes complicated when she falls for a nineteen year old second-hand furniture assistant, who aspires to become rich and leave Battersea forever.
Lots of cool 60s pop music throughout and a great scene in a pub where Rube and Sylvie get up on stage and sing with the beat group, The Delacardos. Many mod-vibe scooter scenes. Movie version of the
BBC TV play that first addressed some of the major social issues of the day.
A Beatles-inspired psychedelic-pop musical score by Manfred Mann creates the perfect atmosphere. Suzy Kendall, Dennis Waterman, Adrienne Posta, Maureen Lipman, Michael Gothard, Hylda Baker. Two hour film. Up The Junction!
