JAZZ ON A SUMMER'S DAY 1958
U.S. film. Excellent quality. Note: this is the high-quality, beautifully remastered version. (Not the washed-out version that is readily available). In Keith Richards' autobiography "Life," he cites this film as his inspiration to play music. In addition to many jazz greats, there are also some non-jazz performers including Chuck Berry and Big Maybelle. Filmed in gorgeous color.

Although the jazz music is terrific, you don't have to be a jazz fan to fully appreciate this film. With lots of footage of the hipster audience and assorted cats hanging around, the viewer is given an opportunity to see a cool slice of 1958 life.

A jazz rhythm section backs Chuck Berry for his nighttime set that featured, "Sweet Little Sixteen," and the band does everything to rattle Berry’s un-jazz style. The jazz musicians all look "amused" but aren't taking very seriously the rock and roll that would soon knock them off the charts for good.

As Berry's classic rock and roll riffs project across the audience, young people spontaneously jump to their feet and start moving to the rhythm while older folks watch perplexed.

Artists include: Jimmy Giuffre Three, Thelonious Monk Trio, Sonny Stitt and Sal Salvador, Anita O'Day, George Shearing, Dinah Washington, Gerry Mulligan Quartet, Art Farmer, Big Maybelle, Chuck Berry, Chico Hamilton Quintet, Louis Armstrong and his All-Stars, Jack Teagarden and Mahalia Jackson.
