THE BALLAD OF ANDY CROCKER 1969
U.S. TV movie. Soul singers Marvin Gaye and Bobby Hatfield (The Righteous Brothers) co-star in this, "Coming Home from Vietnam" film. Also on hand is country singer Jimmy Dean.

Andy Crocker (Lee Majors) is shot in Vietnam and sent home along with his buddy Davey Owens (Marvin Gaye). On his way to Texas he is introduced to some hippies who hide their hash because they think the ex-solider is a narc. They tell him to split so does, and steals one of their motorcycles to ride home to mom and pop.

His first stop after coming back is the old bar where the local rednecks welcome him home. They think Andy is a real American. Andy sees his good ol' buddy Joe Bob (Bobby Hatfield) who breaks the news that Andy's girlfriend Lisa (Joey Heatherton) has married another man—a junior executive. Andy is devastated.

Next he sees his old pal and business partner Mack (Jimmy Dean). Andy had plans to operate a motorcycle shop with Mack but learns that the business is almost bankrupt and has no chance of success. Andy gets into a brawl with Mack who thinks Andy is thick for not seeing the writing on the wall.

Next, Andy gets into a fight with his father and he's asked to leave the house. Are you getting the feeling that this should be a county song? "I lost my girl, my job, my friend, my family..." Well, it is! The recurring song throughout the film tells Andy's story—"His shoes are his only companions...he's travelling to a place called tomorrow on a road called today."

Andy motocycles to Oakland, CA to stay with Davey (Marvin Gaye) with the hopes of finding a job but Davey's wife basically says, there's not enough jobs for black folks, don't take a job and give it to a white boy. In the end Andy walks the street replaying the entire movie in his head. He then finds himself pulling the handle on a door—of the local enlistment center. Lee Majors, Marvin Gaye, Bobby Hatfield, Jimmy Dean, Joey Heatherton, Agnes Moorehead, Pat Hingle, Jill Haworth, Mimi Dillard, Barbara Leigh, Claudia Bryar.
