GENE VINCENT - THE ROCK AND ROLL SINGER 1969
U.K. documentary. A rare film chronicling the first four days of Gene Vincent's 1969 U.K. tour. Teddy boys welcome Gene at the airport as he gets off the plane in London. Gene rehearses with the group The Wild Angels for a TV show appearance and live club gigs. Terrific rockin' performances including "Be-Bop-A-Lula," "Say Mama," "Baby Blue," and more! Unbelievably, the promoters actually try to rip him off!

Gene was suffering debilitating pain from his 1955 motorcycle accident and the 1960 taxicab collision that killed his fellow passenger and friend Eddie Cochran. As Gene performs for his adoring fans, you can practically feel his exhaustion and see the pain behind his determined smile. Less than two years after filming this documentary, Gene died of a burst ulcer. He was only 36 years old.

Plus these bonus selections...

DICKIE PRIDE – THE SHEIK OF SHAKE
U.K. documentary profiling Dickie Pride, the Sheik of Shake! Dickie was a star at 17 and had a regular spot on the first British rock and roll TV show, Oh Boy! His unique quivering and shaking performance style of "Slippin and Slidin" quickly resulted in him being dubbed, "The Sheik of Shake." Vintage performance footage and interviews with those who knew Dickie in the 50s & 60s tell the story of a boy who never made it has big as he should have and ended up a heroin user, the victim of a lobotomy and dead in 1969 at age 27.

Sweet Gene *** The King ! Review by Carole/Baby Blue

This is a fascinating look at Sweet Gene as he is being filmed by the BBC for a documentary in November of 1969 in the UK. A behind the scene's look as he tours and performs. I love watching him and listening to him *** I also find it difficult to watch at times because I understood what was going on both on and off stage. I knew Gene for 14 years *** In my mind he was the King of Rock'N'Roll, his style and voice so unique and the voice of an angel when he sang ballads *** He put so much emotion and feelings into all of his music *** Often times telling his own story through his music. I see sadness and pain in his face. This was just two years before his passing, but I see the sweetness in the face that I loved so much. From 1957 'til the end I watched him step up on stage and blow the crowds away with such songs as "Be-Bop-A-Lula" , "Say Mama" , "Dance To The Bop", "High School Confidential", "Over The Rainbow", "Lotta' Lovin' " and one of my many favorites "Baby Blue". Everything he sang was terrific!!!!! He was a trailblazer in the world of Rock"N'Roll and Rock-A-Billy *** Gene was the "Roots Of Rock"N'Roll" *** In June of 1956 out of nowhere this very shy and modest youngman became a rock sensation. On stage he was full of fire, he soared and took the audience with him *** His first record was an instant hit *** "Be-Bop-A-Lula". Gene also had a fantastic band *** known as the greatest Rock'N'Roll band ever to emerge from the 1950's " THE BLUE CAPS " The band broke up in late summer /early fall of 1958. Gene continued on using back-up bands for the remaining years. He loved to sing, it was his life *** It was a gift from God and his gift to his many fans *** That fan base has exploded over the years as new generations have discovered the Magnificent GENE VINCENT *** I Loved him for his music and for the man I was blessed to know *** He rocked my world *** The sweetest man I ever knew *** Gene died at the young age of 36 *** He is Missed.
