FERRY CROSS THE MERSEY 1965
U.K. film. Brian Epstein presents Ferry Cross The Mersey featuring: Gerry and The Pacemakers, The Fourmost, The Black Knights, Cilla Black, Earl Royce and the Olympics, and The Blackwells. 14 dazzling numbers.

Great Liverpool location footage includes: Birkenhead Market, Locarno Ballroom, Adelphi Hotel, the Pier Head, the Mersey Tunnel and, of course, the world famous Cavern Club. (A real fight broke out at the Locarno Ballroom and was kept in the film.)

Terrific scene in Frank Hessy's music store featuring hundreds of real fans pushed up against the windows while Gerry and the Pacemakers play inside. A very cool document of the Liverpool Mersey Beat boom. Fab film! Jimmy Savile, Julie Samuel, George A. Cooper, Eric Barker, T.P. McKenna, Mona Washbourne.

Songs include Gerry & the Pacemakers: "Baby You're So Good To Me," "Fall In Love," "Ferry Cross The Mersey," "I'll Wait For You," "It's Gonna Be All Right," "She's The Only Girl For Me," "This Thing Called Love," "Why Oh Why." Cilla Black: "Is It Love?" The Fourmost: "I Love You Too." The Black Knights: "I Got A Woman." The Blackwells: "Why Don't You Love Me?" Earl Royce & the Olympics: "Shake A Tail Feather!" George Martin Orchestra: "The Liverpool Scene."

NOTE 1: I was contacted by Lynn D. and she says:

"I was in the film, 'Ferry Cross The Mersey.' I worked for Brian Epstien at NEMS RECORD STORE IN WHITECHAPEL LIVERPOOL. The record shop scene was NOT filmed at HESSEYS record shop. They used an empty shop in COMMUNICATION ROW in Liverpool which was made to look like a record shop. We were given the day off to appear in the film. Kind regards, Lynn D."

NOTE 2: Several years later I was contacted by Tom C. and he says:

"With regards to Lynne who wrote to you about the film "Ferry Cross The Mersey." The music shop scene was not filmed in "Commutation Row" as it is correctly called. It was filmed in what used to be "Manchester Street" now demolished. It may not have been the actual Hesseys shop, but Hesseys did have a shop on Manchester Street.

When they get out of the car to enter the shop, you can clearly see Wellington's Column in the background. Commutation Row (still there) is behind the column from that angle. Manchester Street used to be across the other side of St Georges Gardens by the entrance to the Queensway Tunnel. BTW, I am actually in the film as a six year old (see attached screenshot), though you can only see the back of me for a couple of seconds. Regards, Tom C."

Bonus Selections:
Excerpt from 1963 TV special "Beat City" and Gerry and The Pacemakers and Billy J. Kramer on U.S. TV.

I ordered this movie from a major online retailer website. What I got was basically unwatchable...the quality was that bad. So I took a leap of faith and ordered from here. I am so glad I did. The DVD I received was excellent quality and included bonus clips, which the other version didn't have. The movie, while not great cinema, contains some great music and was just plain fun! A great watch for a Sunday night when there's nothing on TV. The Video Beat will be my go-to for all those hard-to-find rock movies. Count me a very satisfied customer!

[Reply from Video Beat:]
Thanks for your kind words Andrea! I've been to Liverpool a couple of times and have realized that one of the best ways to see the real, Original Cavern Club in action, is to watch this movie.

"Ferry Cross the Mersey" is a very fun movie. Gerry and the Pacemakers are filmed all over Liverpool. They hit the big screen six months after the Beatles in "A Hard Days Night." But this film is impossibly rare--never shown on TV or released on video. Thank you Video Beat for making this great film available. (Posted on 9/26/15)

I love this film! What a time capsule! I moved to Liverpool five minutes after the Beatles left but still caught the second wave of beat groups. It's not great being almost 70, but to be a teenager in Liverpool, in 1963, is worth it! Watch this film! (Posted on 2/1/14)
This is a keeper! Review by Blair

I've owned this film on VHS and DVD and periodically upgraded in an effort to get better quality. This is the best quality I expect to find. I'm finished upgrading.

It's wonderful to finally be able to clearly see landmark Liverpool locations like the Cavern Club, Birkenhead Market, Adelphi Hotel, and the Pier Head.

And the music is terrific! In 1963 Liverpool was the epicenter for musical development. It's a treat to see where it all happened and catch a small feeling of the excitement the city generated.

For all fans of 1960s rock and roll, "Ferry Cross The Mersey" is a film you must see...and you'll watch it more than once! (Posted on 3/19/11)
