Canada's 1960's counter-culture, youth movement is chronicled via TV news and current events programs of the day. There's such a heavy emphasis on "hippies" we were going to call this title, "Hippie Heaven Volume 5." But because there's also beatnik, Beatles, Stones, draft dodger, protest and riot segments — the "Crazed" moniker seemed appropriate.

BEATNIKS - THE HIPPIE FOREFATHERS 1963
The Toronto beatnik scene. A look at Canada's first "Happening" at the Bohemian Embassy.

BEATLEMANIA HITS TORONTO 1964
Teens jam the streets around Maple Leaf Gardens, while inside a mob of screaming Beatle fanatics are having the time of their lives. Fan interviews and live performance footage.

BRIAN JONES IS A PUNK! 1965
The Stones are interviewed and display their, "vulgar, obstinate and hostile" behavior. Brian Jones could have been a Sex Pistol as judged by this interview.

YORKVILLE DRAFT DODGERS 1966
Yorkville, the beatnik, bohemian and hipster section of Toronto, has become ground zero for U.S. draft dodgers escaping to Canada.

YORKVILLE HEAD SHOP 1967
Gandalf's, Canada's first "head shop," is a dream come true for the stoners of Yorkville. A full array of hippie and drug paraphernalia is on display.

VANCOUVER'S HUMAN BE-IN 1967
Inspired by love-ins in the U.S., all the hippies and flower children of Vancouver gather in Ceperley Meadow in Stanley Park to dance, listen to music, fly kites, make merry and turn on.

POLICE BUST YORKVILLE SIT-IN 1967
Toronto police use force (ouch, you smashed my head.) to break up a hippie protest.

YORKVILLE - HIPPIE HAVEN 1967
If Haight-Ashbury is the center of the American hippie world, then Yorkville is ground zero for Canadian hippies. Lots of longhairs, boutiques, stoners, draft dodgers, and freaks.

HAIGHT-ASHBURY - THE BIRTH OF HIP 1967
A Canadian film crew makes a pilgrimage to San Francisco in the summer of 1967 to document the hippie scene—the hair, the dress, the drugs and the driving forces behind the massive youthquake.

HIPPIE LIFE AIN'T EASY 1967
The summer of 1967 hippie scene in Vancouver. An in-depth interview with one of the many longhairs living in the super-hip Kitsilano district. Dropping out takes dedication.

SAMMY DAVIS JR. MEETS DRAFT DODGERS 1968
The Vietnam War has resulted an extraordinary exodus of U.S. youth to Canada. Sammy is in Toronto for two weeks of performances, is opposed to the war, and wants to talk with some U.S. draft dodgers.

VANCOUVER POLITICIANS HATE HIPPIES 1968
Just as the hippies in Yorkville want a place to call their own, so do the hippies of Vancouver. Mayor Tom Campbell is unapologetic, saying hippies will destroy Canada.

YORKVILLE - HIPPIE SOCIETY 1969
The drug-oriented Yorkville lifestyle is examined. A look at the cast of characters who make up Yorkville's hippie scene.

YORKVILLE - HIPPIES TO HIGH RISES 1969
Yorkville is changing fast. The quaint boutiques, happening coffeehouses and cheap hippie housing are all losing ground to new upscale shopping plazas and luxury apartments. Are the hippies gone?

EXPERIENCE JIMI HENDRIX 1969
The Jimi Hendrix Experience is topping the charts. With the release of the band's third album, Electric Ladyland, the group is interviewed on an afternoon youth TV show.

JOHN AND YOKO'S MONTREAL BED-IN 1969
John and Yoko promote peace in a corner suite of rooms 1738-1740-1742 at the stately Queen Elizabeth Hotel. Kyoko sings a song about Al Capp being a jerk.

CANADA'S WOODSTOCK 1970
A news report on the hippie-filled 'Strawberry Fields' music festival held in Ontario.

GASTOWN RIOTS 1971
A crackdown on Vancouver dope users causes division among local politicians and citizens. The Hippies hold a "smoke-in."

ROCHDALE HIPPIE EXPERIMENT 1977
A look back at the failure and legacy of the Rochdale hippie "free education" experiment.

Watching these films has been a wild experience. I was a "weekend tripper" in Yorkville during 1967. This is an awesome time capsule. Historic too! Thanks Video Beat for getting this one together! (Posted on 3/12/13)
