BORN TOO LATE 1980
U.K. documentary. Born Too Late traces the birth of England's rockabilly cult and looks at the new generation of rebels. Some awesomely exaggerated pompadours, sideboards and ducktails! Lots of leather, confederate flags and booze! Rockabilly music by Matchbox.

The film opens in 1978 at the Royalty Dance Hall, Southgate, London where Matchbox rocks their way through "Rocket Trip." Teds and Rebels hire a coach to take them to Margate for a rockabilly weekend—it's a party! A girl explains that the rockabilly scene brings together parents and their children because rock and roll is more than simply music…it's a way of life.

BBC Radio One DJ Stuart Coleman explains the southern U.S. rockabilly sound and how years later it was reborn in the U.K. He says rockabilly is more than just the raw boppin' beat, there's the clothes, hairstyles, and image; last year's punks can become this year's rockabillies!

Back to the Royalty Dance Hall, Southgate, London, this time it's 1980 and Matchbox tears the joint apart. Songs include: "Midnite Dynamos," "Poor Boy," "Buzz Buzz A Dittle It," "Rockabilly Rebel," and "When You Ask About Love."

Graham Fenton explains that the first time he went on stage was on a bet. His pals would buy the booze if he sang with the band. But he chickened out and another bloke got up on stage. Graham thought, "If he can do it, so can I." Matchbox: Graham Fenton, Steve Bloomfield, Gordon Scott, Fred Poke, Jimmy Redhead.
