SOMETHING WILD 1961
U.S. film. Excellent quality. 4:3 aspect ratio. From the first second of the opening credits you know this is going to be an interesting film that looks and sounds terrific! Mary Ann, a cute teenage college student walking through a park on her way home from a night class is attacked and dragged into a wooded area where she is raped.

Although traumatized by this experience she tries, unsuccessfully, to continue living a normal life. She tells no one, not even her parents, about what happened. She balls herself up in the corner of her room, faints in a subway station and upsets her unsympathetic mother.

Haunted by the rape Mary Ann unexpectedly leaves school and in a daze walks around the city through Harlem and Times Square, and down to the Lower East Side where she rents a crummy little room from a creepy, toothpick-chewing landlord.

She gets a job at a Woolworth's but her coworkers dislike her because she seems stuck-up and unfriendly—she can't stand being touched. Her crude and whorish neighbor blares rock 'n' roll from her opened-door room and tries to poke into Mary Ann's business but Mary Ann closes her door in the drunken floozy's face.

Unable to take it anymore, Mary Ann walks across the 59th Street Bridge and attempts to jump into the East River but is stopped by Mike, an auto mechanic who crosses the bridge to get to work. At first Mike seems to be her knight in shining armor and she decides to say with him—but things are not always as they seem!

Shot entirely in New York City with loads of exterior scenes. Very inventive camera work and filmed in exceptionally good-looking black and white. Emotionally gripping soundtrack by Aaron Copeland. Fantastic nighttime scenes in Times Square, Broadway and 42nd Street—the good old days before it looked like Disneyworld. Caroll Baker, Ralph Meeker, Mildred Dunnock, Jean Stapleton, Doris Roberts, Clifton James, George L. Smith. Something Wild!
