SOCIAL ERROR 1935
U.S. film. The overwhelming social error in this film is the degrading depiction of a black manservant named "Shadow" who delivers stereotypical "yesum boss" lines and is treated appallingly by the so-called responsible adults in the film. Bentley, a rich kid college student, stands before the dean of Westmore College who rattles off all the rule-breaking behavior he has engaged in during his time at school.

Next stop the local youth hangout where Bentley and his pals order some yummy ice cream treats. Sitting in the corner is Jackson, the sourpuss, pencil-neck jock who complains about the Westmore students and Bentley in particular. After some singing, dancing, and acrobatics a fist fight breaks out and the place is nearly destroyed.

The plot changes and all of a sudden it's a film about a rich heiress being kidnapped and Bentley and Shadow, in bumbling situations, attempt to rescue her from evil kidnapers. All ends well as Bentley and the girl kiss while the camera focuses on Shadow who mugs, squeals and laughs in what is considered today to be a shameful depiction of blacks. Look for some very nice Los Angeles and Hollywood exterior shots during a cops-n-crooks chase scene. David Sharpe, Gertrude Messinger, Monte Blue, Lloyd Hughes, Sheila Terry, Fred 'Snowflake' Toones, Fred Kohler Jr., Matty Fain, Joseph W. Girard. Social Error.
