CATALINA CAPER
(a.k.a. NEVER STEAL ANYTHING WET) 1967

U.S. film. One of the last movies in the "Beach Party" genre. It's swingin' beach babes in bikinis, a stolen antique scroll, and great rock and roll!

Little Richard, The Cascades, Mary Wells, Carol Connors (from the "Teddy Bears"). Superb mid-sixties fashions and 1960s rock and roll. Cool LA surf scene and groovy, hip lingo! Tommy Kirk, Del Moore, Peter Duryea, Robert Donner, Ulla Stromstedt, Venita Wolf, Peter Mamakos, Lyle Waggoner, Sue Casey. Catalina Caper!

Bonus Selection: Music Scene performances.

THE CLOSEST BEACH MOVIE TO A CRUISE PARTY! Review by EARLINE

Every Summer I pull out all of my Beach Films and before the Summer is over I will have gone through all of them at least three times. I do not remember which one, but during the end credits of one of the Frankie and Annette Beach Films a title: Cruise Party, was given as a soon to be released film, which never materialized.

Most of the Beach Films I have ever seen usually take place mostly on the beach, in a Beach House or Hotel, with some surfing or water skiing. But to the best of what I know Catalina Caper is the closest I have found to having a cruise theme.

This is one of my favorites of all the Beach Films I own. Unlike in some Beach Films, the dialog in this film is at least intelligent. It starts with an Antique Scroll getting stolen. One of the boys who come over to Catalina Island for a vacation runs into his parents and figures that they are up to something. He soon finds out that he is right. He has become friends with some of the other boys who accidentally gets involved with the mess that his parents are in.

Along with that mess, the boys messes themselves up with their girlfriends because of to much attention given to one particular girl, who is suppose to be engaged to one of the bad boys, who is out to retrieve the stolen scroll before the vacationing boys find it and return it to the Museum.

I have to admit, Little Richard shocked me at first. Of course I knew who he was but I did not know that he was in this film. I didn't like the song he sang, at first. I thought it was silly. Now that I've seen this movie About fifteen to twenty times I don't cringe so much when I hear it.

For anyone who is a fan of the TV Show: Flipper might remember Ulla Stromstedt from the second season. She played an Oceanographer who becomes friends with The Ricks and a love interest for Porter Ricks. In this film she is engaged to Angelo who is one of the bad boys.

The movie concludes with the scroll being returned to the Museum, the parents are out of trouble and decides to try to live honestly, the boys get their girls back and everyone is on the beach dancing and having a good time. I can't wait for the next Summer Holiday because I'll be watching this again. I love this movie.

BUY THIS MOVIE! IT IS ONE OF THE BETTER ONES! (Posted on 6/4/23)
