NATIONAL SKATEBOARD CHAMPIONSHIPS 1965
U.S. TV. This event was the first-ever skateboard contest and took place at the La Palma Stadium, Anaheim, CA between May 22nd and 23rd 1965. Overall champions for the day were selected based on their performance in freestyle, flatland slalom and downhill slalom. Lots of cool tricks by boys and girls 13 to 17 years old. The event was filmed and shown on ABC's "Wide World of Sports" and hosted by Bill Flemming with assistance by Skip Newell.

What viewers didn't know is that this was the peak of skateboard interest in the U.S. as the American Medical Association soon labeled the sport "a new menace" and that the skateboard has "overtaken the bicycle as the chief cause of childhood injury." Safety-minded parents were soon laying down restrictions and confiscating boards. A decade later, the sport would recover.

Plus this bonus selection...

SKATEBOARD KINGS 1978
U.K. documentary. Skateboard Kings, produced for the British Television series, "The World About Us," features early pioneers Tony Alva, Ray Flores, Shogo Kubo, Stacy Peralta, Billy Yeron, Paul Constantineau, Jerry Valdez and Kent Senatore among and others. There are visits to Skateboarder Magazine, a few empty pools, a new skate park, a typical Dogtown (Santa Monica-Venice Beach) house party, skateboarding demonstrations, a visit to the infamous Arizona Pipes, and a skateboard manufacturer. This exceptional film chronicles not just the Dogtown scene, but many elements that made the 1970's skateboarding experience truly unique.
