THE EXILES 1961
U.S. film. Excellent quality. It's like cracking open a time capsule. Filmed in gorgeous black and white, and featuring a fantastic soundtrack of pre-surf-instrumentals, rockabilly, rock 'n' roll and R&B sounds, "The Exiles" follows a day and night of a group of displaced twenty-something, delinquent, native American kids drinking, dancing, gambling, fighting and partying their way through their no-future existence.

They are exiles from their Indian reservations and their culture as they succumb to a booze-fueled, drifting lifestyle in the old Bunker Hill section of Los Angeles—which no longer exists. Look for beautiful nighttime photography of seedy street life—bars, liquor stores and cheap hotels. Signs in the film read: "Coffee and a donut, 10 cents." "Rooms $5 an hour, $10 a night." "Shoes on sale, $7.00." There are cops on the beat, twirling their nightsticks. Everybody is always smoking.

Bar scenes include playing records on a Seeburg M100B jukebox and dancing to real rock and roll while hitting on the vulnerable young women who are later brought to "Hill X," overlooking L.A.'s dazzling downtown. Filming was done in 1958.

The film features rock and roll music composed specifically for the film and performed by The Revels—the famous 1960s surf band, known for their famous song "Church Key." Yvonne Williams, Homer Nish, Tommy Reynolds, Rico Rodriguez, Clifford Ray Sam, Clydean Parker, Mary Donahue.
