THREE SWINGS ON A PENDULUM 1967
U.K. documentary. Rare and fascinating film that tries to discern if London really deserves its reputation as being a "swinging" city. On one hand, the film is a "must watch" and offers extraordinarily rare and wonderful footage of 1967 London and Carnaby Street, on the other hand, the three presenters are non-Englishmen (arts reporter Robert Hughes, writer Lewis Nkosi and journalist Olivier Todd) and they're snarky, insufferable snobs.

The film features some of the most brilliant Carnaby Street footage we've seen, including inside Carnaby street shops. Shops seen include Granny Takes A Trip, Biba, I Was Lord Kitchener’s Valet, and Male. Very good interview with playwright Arnold Wesker at The Roundhouse who says the Beatles have been exploited. The Roundhouse was then home to Wesker's Centre 42 drama group, but earlier, in October 1966, it hosted the decade's greatest fancy dress, the "International Times First All-Night Rave Pop Op Costume Masque Drag Ball" where Paul McCartney arrived dressed as a sheikh. Marianne Faithful won the prize for skimpiest costume (an innovative variant on a nun's habit).

Charming interview respondents include passersby on King’s Road, among them the actress Geraldine Chaplin. Look for the fantastic sweaty night club scene featuring the group, Herbie Goins and the Nightimers, including Harry Beckett and Mick Eve (one of Georgie’s Blue Flames). The most precise comment comes from cartoonist Osbert Lancaster who says, "I firmly believe that from any period in the world's history the amount of adultery, fornication and homosexuality that occurs has remained absolutely constant, the only thing that changes, is people's attitudes towards it and the amount they say and talk about it."

Plus this bonus selection...

SHAKESPEARS IN THE ALLEY
U.K. documentary. Shakespears In The Alley looks at the towering influences of Bob Dylan and the Beatles and rock and roll and "folk rock." Rare footage of Bob Dylan and the Fab Four and interviews with Beatles producer George Martin, Dylan session musician Al Kooper, Peter Yarrow of Peter, Paul and Mary, Roger McGuinn and David Crosby of the Byrds, and beat poet Allen Ginsberg.

Cool vintage footage of Lonnie Donegan, the Beatles and George Martin in the studio circa ’63, Bob Dylan, the Byrds, Barry McGuire, Simon & Garfunkel and others. Other interviews include: Lonnie Donegan, Derek Taylor, Al Aronowitz, Joan Baez, Sonny Bono, Robbie Robertson and others. Very cool NYC radio interview with Dylan. Factoid: With so many covers of Bob Dylan songs in the charts, Sonny Bono noticed the word "babe" being use a lot. It was his inspiration to write, "I Got You Babe."
