HOLLYWOOD AND THE STARS - VOLUME 3

THE SWASHBUCKLERS
Feb-11-64. Swashbucklers like Robin Hood have been celebrated in story and legend for centuries. For they are a special breed of men searching for adventure, challenging injustice and laughing at danger. Hollywood's Swashbucklers include: Douglass Fairbanks, Ronald Coleman, John Derrick, Douglass Fairbanks Jr., Cornel Wilde, Tyrone Power, Paul Henreid, and more. There is a special emphasis on Errol Flynn and his time at the top and his spiral downward.

WHAT A WAY TO GO! - AN EXTRAVAGANZA IN THE MAKING
Apr-20-64. A fascinating look and the making of the film, What A Way To Go! The episode follows the purchase of the original script, meetings to discuss the cast and story development, and lots of behind-the-scenes Hollywood movie making. Very interesting. The film's stars include Dean Martin, Dick Van Dyke, Paul Newman, Robert Mitchum, Gene Kelly, Bob Cummings, Shirley Maclaine and a chimpanzee! Cool scenes of Shirley Maclaine and Paul Newman as beatniks.

TEEN-AGE IDOLS – PART 1
Jan-8-64. This episode opens with surf rock 'n' roll and dancing teenagers. Then a flashback to 1943 and cool footage of Frank Sinatra as the first teenage idol and the birth of the teenager. Next up: Tony Curtis, Natalie Wood, Debbie Reynolds, Marlon Brando, Tab Hunter, Sal Mineo and a special emphasis on James Dean and the birth of a cult. Elvis Presley sends parents into panic! Cool behind the scenes footage on an Elvis movie set. Bobby Darin, Paul Anka, Annette Funicello, Frankie Avalon, Tommy Sands and Fabian.

Absolutely awesome footage of a "rockabilly show" in Japan that features a group rolling around on the stage and teenagers rushing forward and going ape! Tommy Steele, Bill Haley, Dick Dale, and Ricky Nelson. Dick Clark's position in the teenage world. Cool segment on teenage magazines and movies. Let's put it this way: this is an awesome episode! Little did they know that one month after this episode aired the Beatles would appear on Ed Sullivan and blow the lid off the whole thing!

TEEN-AGE IDOLS – PART 2
Jan-15-64. This episode goes deeper into the teenage idol phenomenon by focusing specifically on the career of Fabian. He's discovered in Philadelphia by Bob Marcucci who thinks Fabian is a cross between Elvis Presley and Ricky Nelson. Cool scenes include: Getting fitted for hip threads, the big publicity blitz that launched his career, being advised by Dick Clark, publicity dates with starlets, performances in gymnasiums, kissing the winner of a Fabian contest, and being on tour with artists who Fabian says were drug addicts!

Fabian says he realized that his female fans were awkward and not good looking (meanwhile the camera pans the girls!), and that he represents their fantasy boyfriend. Frantic teenagers rip off his clothes, scratch him and make him bleed! Fabian complains that his manager tells him what to say, what to do and what to think! Meanwhile the press writes nasty things about him. Eventually it's all too much and he quits singing and moves into acting – and he becomes successful. Fabian is shown driving his Porsche onto the MGM studio lot.

HOLLYWOOD AND THE STARS - VOLUME 4

HOW TO SUCCEED AS A GANGSTER
Nov-4-63. The lethal chatter of machine guns. The electricity generated by great stars like Edward G. Robinson, James Cagey and Humphrey Bogart, this episode is a study in how to succeed as a gangster, Hollywood style! Real-life prohibition and bootleggers, lead to gangsters and organized crime. A look at Al Capone, Chicago gangsters and John Dillinger becomes the setup for a behind the scenes look at Hollywood's portrayal of gangster life. Bogart was cast to look like mobster John Dillinger. Robinson, Al Capone and Cagney, Deanie O'Banion.

THE IMMORTAL JOLSON
Oct-28-63. The career and personal life of the famed "Mammy" singer, Al Jolson is profiled. Clips chronicle his vaudeville days, his marriage to star Ruby Keeler, his mostly unsuccessful movie career and his comeback entertaining troops during World War II.

THEY WENT THAT-A-WAY
Oct-18-63. Film clips trace the changes in the cowboy and Western movie during the last 60 years, from the likes of Bronco Billy through to John Wayne. Several actors are shown appearing in westerns before they became big stars. Cool footage of Japanese westerns and American westerns dubbed in foreign languages. From the Great Train Robbery to John Wayne. Then TV gets into the act!

ON LOCATION - "NIGHT OF THE IGUANA"
Feb-24-64. A motion picture company and director John Houston travel to Mismaloya, Mexico for an on location shoot for the film Night of the Iguana starring Richard Burton, Deborah Kerr, and Ava Gardner. A fascinating look at what it took to make this film; having to build roads, bring in electricity and build buildings to house the over 100 film workers and create the sets for the film. To help reduce costs Mexican laborers are utilized and work tirelessly.

IN SEARCH OF KIM NOVAK
Mar-9-64. Kim Novak is something of a riddle in Hollywood. She almost never appears in public, she rarely gives interviews, and even on the screen she projects a remote and mysterious quality that is her trademark. It turns out she's a beatnik as she digs hanging out at an artist colony at Big Sur, listing to jazz, playing her guitar and looking at the Sea. She says she lives in two worlds.

Note: This title comes on two discs.
