THAT RHYTHM, THOSE BLUES + GOD ONLY KNOWS: VOCAL HARMONY

Double Feature!

THAT RHYTHM, THOSE BLUES 1988
U.S. documentary. The best archival photos and footage of the black ‘50s R&B scene! An amazing look at pre-rock n roll "all black" rhythm & blues from the ‘40s and early ‘50s. Terrific interviews with R&B artists (Charles Brown, Ruth Brown), record store/label owner Bobby Robinson, disc jockeys ("Shelly The Playboy," "Diggy Doo"), record producers (Jerry Wexler, Ralf Bass), and two white "spectators" who attended "colored folks night" who say, "You ain't lived until you've been black on Saturday night!" Ruth Brown describes the early scene as "music for Negroes that some Negroes thought was too raucous!" Shots of black record stores, clubs and concerts that will blow you away! Unbelievable jitterbuggin' footage. The KKK cut down a radio tower to get the music off the air! Absolutely fantastic! That Rhythm Those Blues!

Plus this bonus selection...

GOD ONLY KNOWS: VOCAL HARMONY–THE VOICE 2003
U.K. documentary. This fascinating documentary looks at the collaboration of human voices that produces group harmony. In the 1950s gospel belonged to the house of the Lord while its offspring called "doo wop"—four and five-part harmony—belonged to the devil. "Doo-wop" would become known as rhythm and blues. An examination of how the Pentecostal church and its call and response and gravel voice technique influenced secular music. Many NYC gangs had their own vocal groups that would “battle” with other gang-groups. Fantastic Frankie Lymon home movies—in color! Vintage footage of 1950s black teenage culture. Fantastic and, in some cases, never-before-seen archival footage includes The Delta Rhythm Boys, The Moonglows, The Flamingos, The Clovers, Frankie Lymon and the Teenagers, The Chantels, The Staple Singers, The Dixie Hummingbirds, Ray Charles and the Raylettes, Bill Monroe and his Blue Grass Boys, The Boswell Sisters, The Mills Brothers, The Four Freshmen, The Everly Brothers, The Marvellettes, The Supremes, The Rhythm Boys. Interviews include Mavis Staples, Lou Rawls, Solomon Burke, Ben E. King, Lamont Dozier, Brian Wilson, Neil Sedaka, the Chantels, Ray Charles, Everly Brothers, Mary Wilson and Ahmet Ertegun, the founder of Atlantic Records. God Only Knows: Vocal Harmony!
