RARE SKATEBOARD FILMS: SKATERDATER 1965 + THE DEVIL'S TOY 1966

Double Feature!

SKATERDATER 1965

U.S. film. One of the first, and very best, films to feature skateboarding. A group of kids (they look 11-14) styling around on clay wheels, walking the nose, and doing insane tricks on narrow little deathplanks! One of the skaters catches the eye of a young girl and a love interests develops. Faced with the dilemma, he has to choose between the girl or his skateboarding buddies.
The surf rock soundtrack features Davie Allan and the Arrows playing "Skaterdater Rock." The skateboard riders were members of The Imperial Skateboard Club from Torrance, CA. Check out their boss matching "team" jackets with the racing stripe down the chest. Skaterdater was the winner of the Palme d'Or for Best Short Film at the 1966 Cannes Film Festival. It was also nominated for an Academy Award in the Best Short Subject category.

THE DEVIL'S TOY 1966

CAN. film. Is skateboarding corrupting the youth of the world? Montreal is a wild skateboarding town as evidenced by "The Devil's Toy" which shows kids wearing Beatle boots and trench coats while riding homemade skateboards and throwing rocks at police officers! This film is a satire and made to look like a documentary that portrays skateboarding as so dangerous that Canada is trying to ban them from the streets! Cops take away the kid's skateboards. There are references to Jan & Dean and gangs of skateboarders running away from the police.

Plus this bonus selection...

HISTORY OF SURFING 1965
U.S. film. A very cool short film examining the history of surfing. Eddie Albert, star of TV’s "Green Acres," narrates the film. The History of Surfing looks back 800 years to the Polynesian cultures of Hawaii and examines all aspects of the sport. Eddie tells us that surfing is the most exploited sport — with all the Beach Blanket Movies and Surf Bands, etc.
