ROCK & ROLL : SHAKESPEARS IN THE ALLEY and RESPECT 1995

"Rock & Rock" is probably one of the best documentary series ever produced on the history of rock and roll. It's a 10 episode series that traces rock and roll's beginnings in the '40s and '50s up until the mid 1990s. This title contains episodes 3 and 4.

EPISODE 3 : SHAKESPEARS IN THE ALLEY
1995 documentary. Shakespears In The Alley looks at the towering influences of Bob Dylan and the Beatles and rock and roll and "folk rock." This episode features rare footage of Bob Dylan and the Fab Four and interviews with Beatles producer George Martin, Dylan session musician Al Kooper, Peter Yarrow of Peter, Paul and Mary, Roger McGuinn and David Crosby of the Byrds, and beat poet Allen Ginsberg. Cool vintage footage of Lonnie Donegan, the Beatles and George Martin in the studio circa ’63, Bob Dylan, the Byrds, Barry McGuire, Simon & Garfunkel and others. Other interviews include: Lonnie Donegan, Derek Taylor, Al Aronowitz, Joan Baez, Sonny Bono, Robbie Robertson and others. Very cool NYC radio interview with Dylan. Factoid: With so many covers of Bob Dylan songs in the charts, Sonny Bono noticed the word "babe" being use a lot. It was his inspiration to write, "I Got You Babe."

EPISODE 4 : RESPECT
1995 documentary. Respect chronicles the transformation of black gospel music into a defining sound for all Americans. On hand to tell the tale: Berry Gordy Jr., Ray Charles, Martha Reeves, Mary Wilson, Booker T., Steve Cropper, Duck Dunn and Wilson Pickett. This episode journeys from Detroit's Mo town Records to Stax Records in Memphis. Last stop: the FAME studios in Muscle Shoals, Alabama where Aretha Franklin made musical magic. Other interviews include: Brian Holland, Eddie Holland, Rufus Thomas, Jerry Wexler, Tom Dowd, Rick Hall and others. Vintage footage includes: Ray Charles, Marvelettes, Sam Cooke, Jackie Wilson, the Miracles, the Temptations, the Supremes, Marvin Gaye, Otis Redding, Aretha Franklin and many others.
