LAST SUMMER 1969
U.S. film. A very different kind of teenage movie. Do you remember the first time you copped a feel? Remember the butterflies in your stomach, the ache in your abdomen and the confused feelings of lust and love? This film looks at coming-of-age like no other film before it.
Three teenagers, two boys (Richard Thomas and Bruce Davison) and a girl (Barbara Hershey), explore friendship, love and sex during a summer vacation on New York's Fire Island. The girl runs around in a bikini, plays with her pet seagull, goes topless, and drinks Heinekens and smokes pot (while a sitar is playing on the soundtrack) with the boys. Their three-way "friendship" gets risqué when they have some adolescent groping in a darkened movie theater and during a heavy petting soapy swimsuit scene!
The trio allows a second girl (Catherine Burns) who is innocent and homely into their clique, but the first girl and the boys, who are led by her, begin to subtly and then overtly torment the new girl. Last Summer puts squeaky clean Richard Thomas (pre-John Boy) in an unusual position as an accessory to rape. Bruce Davison also has a strong role (and a bottomless scene) enduring the frustrations that build up to the shattering and violent climax of the film! Catherine Burns was nominated for an Oscar for her performance. When does that happen in a teen movie? Never! Last Summer!
