DON'T MAKE WAVES 1967

Double Feature!

DON'T MAKE WAVES 1967
U.S. film. A swinging 1960s beach movie that provides a terrific look at California beach culture during the time of long board surfers and muscle beach. New York tourist Tony Curtis falls asleep on a Los Angeles beach and wakes up to catamarans, surfers (even a surfing dog!), bodybuilders, acrobats, motorcycle chicken races and beautiful Sharon Tate as a seductive surfer-skydiver named "Malibu" who gives Curtis mouth-to-mouth resuscitation when he is bonked on the head by a flying surfboard. There are romantic entanglements and a Malibu cliff house that tips over and slides into the muddy beach below. It's the mid-60s American Dream of youth, beauty, money and sex in southern California.

The Byrds perform title song, "Don't Make Waves" while the rest of the soundtrack is a showcase for the composing and arranging genius of Vic Mizzy (TV themes for "The Addams Family" and "Green Acres"). Lots of twangin' wah-wah guitars, creeping bass lines, bumping horns and sexy organ fills.

At the time of the film's release, life-sized cardboard cutouts of Sharon Tate wearing a bikini were placed in cinema foyers. It was also linked to a Coppertone advertising campaign and Mattel's "Malibu Barbie" doll was based on Tate and her character, Malibu. Tony Curtis, Claudia Cardinale, Robert Webber, Joanna Barnes, Sharon Tate, David Draper, Mort Sahl, Dub Taylor, Edgar Bergen, Jim Backus, Johnny Fain, China Lee. Don't Make Waves!

THE DEVIL'S TOY 1966
CAN. film. Is skateboarding corrupting the youth of the world? Montreal is a wild skateboarding town as evidenced by "The Devil's Toy" which shows kids wearing Beatle boots and trench coats while riding homemade skateboards and throwing rocks at police officers! This film is a satire and made to look like a documentary that portrays skateboarding as so dangerous that Canada is trying to ban them from the streets! Cops take away the kid's skateboards. There are references to Jan & Dean and gangs of skateboarders running away from the police.
