BILLIE 1965
U.S. film. Patty Duke plays "Billie," a 15-year-old girl who can run faster than all the boys on the track team because she uses "the Beat" in her head. The "beat" is rock n roll music! She's invited to be on the boys' track team which alarms the school principal—and her father who is running for mayor on what today would be considered a "male chauvinist ticket." Dad soon changes his tune when Billie becomes a track star. Lots of cool 60s dance scenes and fashions. Patty Duke sings and dances! Look for Ted Bessell, Jim Backus, Dick Sargent, and Richard Deacon. In the end Billie decides she'd rather be a girl than a track star, which infuriates many people, but the film was actually very daring for 1965 with its "everyone should do what they like" theme. Songs include: "Billie," "The Beat," "Lonely Little In Between," "Funny Little Butterflies," "Hold It," "The Girl Is A Girl Is A Girl," "Victory Dance," and "Discoteque."
