1940s SAN FRANCISCO FILMS

Beautiful photography captures San Francisco and the nearby Bay Area in a mesmerizing time capsule. Some areas of the city haven't changed at all, others have vanished. Beautiful footage captures the hustle bustle of everyday life, transportation, fashions and more!

SAN FRANCISCO RODACHROME 1940-41
Mission Dolores, Cliff House, Golden Gate Park Aquarium, Muir Woods, San Francisco Bay, Palace of Fine Arts, Yacht Harbor, Fishing Boats, Chinatown, Business District, Treasure Island.

SAN FRANCISCO CALIFORNIA 1941
Photographed and edited by John H. Summers. Beautiful color photography showcasing the city's important landmarks. The camera lingers so you can see the comings-and-goings of everyday life. Very interesting.

FAREWELL TO TREASURE ISLAND 1940
If you've ever driven from San Francisco to Oakland over the Bay Bridge and wondered about the significance of Treasure Island, this fascinating color film has the answers. From 1939-1940 the Golden Gate International Exposition (much like a World' Fair) was held on Treasure Island in San Francisco Bay. Fantastic architecture and landscaping make Treasure Island look futuristic even today!

SAN FRANCISCO 1940
Color film. Chinatown, Fisherman's Wharf, the Marina, Seal Rock, Bay Bridge, Golden Gate Bridge and opening 7-day celebration, 1939 Golden Gate International Exposition.

SAN FRANCISCO – BY THE GOLDEN GATE
Terrific aerial and close-up street footage shows the entire city in all its magnificence. Lots of detailed information.

GOLDEN GATE CITY – SAN FRANCISCO
Terrific footage of entire city. Nice images of the Cliff House and Great Highway, Windmills, etc.

SILENT FILM AERIAL FILM
Views of the city and daredevil stunts atop buildings and on motorcycles and in airplanes.

THREE TO GET READY 1967
A Progress Report from BART (Bay Area Rapid Transit). Interesting shots of BART's 800-ton, double-barreled tubes being laid into SF bay, a large tower being demolished, old ferry piers being pulled up, etc. The dramatic high moment occurs when two ends of the Berkeley Hills tunnel are joined. Anybody who rides BART should see this film.

ALONG THE WAY 1968
A Progress Report from BART (Bay Area Rapid Transit). Very cool construction footage while the narrator tells us how wonderful the project will be for the Bay Area. (Because at the time of filming it was a nightmare for motorists, commuters, etc.) Very interesting.
