THE PRIVATE LIVES OF ADAM AND EVE 1960
U.S. film. Nobody but Albert Zugsmith could have assembled the cast for this rare oddity – a bizarre retelling of the story of Adam and Eve, Satan, the apple, Paradise and the Garden of Eden! The story begins on a bus headed for Reno. There's a traveling salesman (Mel Torme), a two-bit casino owner and his sexpot wife (Mickey Rooney and Fay Spain), sex-kitten Tuesday Weld as a teenage runaway ("Once they called her Bobby Sox. Now they call her Baby Sex."), There's the voluptuous Mamie Van Doren as Eve and a pre-ADAM 12 Martin "Marty" Milner as Adam. Paul Anka plays rock 'n' roller Pinkie Parker, who steers his hot rod jalopy with his feet so his hands are free to play his guitar and sing the title tune. The film begins in black and white until they reach the Garden of Eden at which point it turns into "Spectracolor" then back to black and white after Adam bites the apple. Look for the cave scene where Adam and Eve quarrel over moving the boulders (furniture) and the one in which the devil convinces Eve to cut her long hair which is strategically pasted to cover her huge breasts. It's full of little comic bits and some funny dialog regarding the pair's living conditions and social standing. Eve: "If I had a mother, I'd go home to her!" Adam: "Don't be silly...I am your mother!" The Private Lives of Adam and Eve was so hated in its day that the Catholic Legion of Decency gave it a Condemned rating! Most of the cast had worked with Zugsmith on other films, notably, Sex Kittens Go To College and Girls Town.
