POOR COW 1967

Double Feature!

POOR COW 1967
U.K. film. "I fell in the family way when I was 18 and I got married to a right bastard." A very realistic portrait of a working-class girl who makes one bad life-choice after another, Poor Cow presents a startling juxtaposition to clean and shiny "swinging 60s London" because what we see here is a scummy-looking London filled with squalor and slums. The film has a rather mod feel and its soundtrack includes songs by Donovan and many other mid-60s top pop artists. The story unfolds in episodes as "Joy" marries and has a child with a chauvinistic thug who very quickly winds up in prison. Now all alone with her son, she begins a relationship with her husband's mate (another low-life criminal) who seems to give her some happiness but who also ends up in jail. Joy then takes up with a succession of seedy types who offer her nothing but temporary diversions. When her son goes missing she briefly realizes what is most important to her. It's important to note that Poor Cow is not a "downer film"—its characters don't seem to realize their situation and somehow make the best of it. Carol White, John Bindon, Terence Stamp, Queenie Watts, Gladys Dawson, Kate Williams, Ken Campbell, Billy Murray, Ron Pember, Phillip Ross, Geraldine Sherman. Poor Cow!

Plus this bonus selection...

"IN" GEAR 1967
U.K. newsreel. It's the swinging London fashion scene on parade. This British "Look at Life" newsreel presents an eye-candy array of dazzling & colorful mod fashions! Suits, shirts, pants, shoes, boots, jackets, dresses, belts, bags, hats, caps, ties, skirts, blouses, scarves, dickies, and more! The viewer is taken to King's Road, SOHO, and Carnaby Street. Some of the shops visited are: "Granny Takes a Trip," "Hung on You," "The Antiques Supermarket," "I Was Lord Kitchener's Valet," and "Gear." Next, it's off to the discotheque club scene where the "in" gear is worn. Clubs include: "Tiles," "Bag of Nails" (the Beatles used to hang out here), "Samantha's," "Georges" and "the Saddle Room."
