Double Feature!
THE SOUL HUSTLER (aka The DAY THE LORD GOT BUSTED) 1976
U.S. film. 1950s teen idol, Fabian, stars in an unlikely role—as a long-haired, pot smoking, musician, junkie con man! Fabian plays "Matthew," a drifter who crashes a preacher's evangelical tent show, gets on stage and lies to the audience about his "problems" to get them to donate money. The preacher is so impressed with Matthew's soft-sell style that he offers to teach him how make big money. The preacher is a huckster who rehearses Matthew to play big cities and go after young people as a rock and roll evangelical who gets paid in cash and hookers!
Through rigorous marketing and promotion, Matthew goes from backwoods tent shows to the LA Forum and along the way there are heroin overdoses, beat-up hookers, and rock star tantrums. Soul Hustler provides an insight into the world of religious crusades and how they operate as a cash generating business by playing on people's faith to get their cash. Casey Kasem plays a slimy San Diego promoter. Total head-spinning ending! Fabian, Nai Bonet, Tony Russel, Larry Bishop, Casey Kasem, William Bonner, Kitty Vallacher, Marshall Reed, Lionel Ames, Larry Easley, Robert Swan, Tracy Morgan, Mike Angel, Diana Darrin. The Soul Hustler!
