Two hours of R&B and vocal group harmony! The Pittsburgh sound is proud with it roots in jazz, gritty R&B and smooth vocal harmonies. Highlights include; rare video footage (complete songs), interviews with original group members, the deejays who spun the records, and the fans who love the music.

THE SOUND OF PITTSBURGH 2001
U.S. documentary. Rare footage of The Five Keys, The Del Vikings, The El Venos, The Tempos, Jimmy Beaumont and The Skyliners, The Vogues, The Marvelettes, The Blossoms and much more! The Pittsburgh sound is special—deejays would play B-sides and songs that other markets ignored.

Rare footage includes: The Five Keys: "Ling Ting Tong." The Del Vikings: "Jitterbug Mary," "Can't Wait," "Come Go With Me," "Kingdom of Love. The Tempos: "See You In September."

Jimmy Beaumont and The Skyliners: "It Happened Today," "This I Swear," "Since I Don't Have You," "Pennies From Heaven." The Vogues: "You're The One," "Five O'clock World," "Turn Around, Look At Me." The Marvelettes: "Lockin' Up My Heart." The Blossoms: "Good, Good Luvin'"

Dave Lerchey of the Del Vikings talks about what it was like being in a mixed group in the 1950s. Norman Wright of the Del Vikings talks about how he came to Philadelphia and the Del Vikings' success. Other interviews include: The Skyliners, Fred Johnson "Mr Bass Man" from the Marcels, the Holidays, the Vogues, the Tempos, the Jaggerz, Tommy James and more.

Other performances: The La-Rells: "Everybody Knew." The Clef-Tones: "Lover Boy." The Holidays: "Miss You." Tommy James and the Shondells: "Hanky Panky." More. Highly recommended!

This is a terrific program with lots of rare footage I hadn't seen before. Now I want to go to Pittsburgh, listen to doo wop and visit some record (vinyl!) stores! (Posted on 2/26/14)
