Unlike the "clean teen" and "youth searching for meaning" films of the 60s and early 70s, The Van is an early example of a new type of teenage comedy that featured nudity, sexual situations, and drug use.

Bobby is a recent high-school graduate who buys a customized 1977 Dodge van with his college savings...so he can use it to pick up women! The inside is a fully decked out plush chamber that includes a waterbed and an 8-track sound system.

Bobby's pursuit of sex leads him into a number of disappointing episodes. One scene features a pinball-playing girl who agrees to share a joint in his van. Though willing to get high, she objects to his advances. Laughing it off, he tries raping her, but then finds she has stuffed her bra with wads of toilet paper. Next, is a Mexican girl, who takes off her top but wants money. Another woman is also a prostitute, and her pimp barges in for payment.

Bobby's real goal is to make it with Sally, the hot blonde girlfriend of his archenemy Dugan. Dugan is a strong, muscular and tattooed bully who is determined to have the fastest van in town. The "Van" is a 1977 Dodge B200 Tradesman, which was customized by the legendary George Barris.

The music heard on the film's soundtrack is by Sammy Johns and includes the songs: "Chevy Van," "Early Morning Love," "Jenny," "Rag Doll," and "Hang My Head and Moan." Stuart Goetz, Deborah White, Danny DeVito, Morgan Moses, Marcie Barkin, Bill Adler, Steve Oliver, Connie Hoffman.

Tom is an intellectual longhair drop-out, hippie, surfer dude from southern California who does all the usual early 70s hippie things like, smoking weed, dropping acid and hanging out with other hippies like him. He goes on stoner hikes in the woods and brings his flute and jams with a friend on an acoustic guitar. Tom is into self-realization. He likes to make pottery (I guess most things having to do with pot are cool with Tom!) Warning: you might get a contact high watching this film!
