Double Feature!

TAKING OFF 1971
U.S. film. Excellent quality. 16:9 widescreen. The misadventures of suburban parents searching for their runaway daughter provides the main plot for this classic "generation gap" film. A nice girl, recently turned hippie, attends an acoustic guitar/vocal audition where she is introduced to the drug scene. When she doesn't come home, her worried parents assume that she has "run away."

Her father and a friend go to the police to report her missing and then stop off at a bar where they proceed to get roaring drunk. Soon the daughter comes home and acts a little stoned. Her parents think that she's "on something" and begin interrogating her. She can't cope and this time really does run away.

The father searches all through NYC's East Village, gets chased by hippie-bikers and meets a woman who also has a runaway teenager. The woman introduces him to the Society of Parents of Fugitive Children (S.P.F.C.).

While searching for their daughter, the runaway's parents end up at an Ike & Tina Turner Revue concert where the band is ripping up the stage performing "Goodbye So Long."

Soon both mother and father attend a S.P.F.C. meeting where the topic of discussion is marijuana. In an effort to "understand their kids" the group participates in a marijuana smoking experiment. They are taught the proper way to inhale, hold, and pass the joint. They are told to never hold the joint after inhaling because that's bad manners—one should never "bogart" a joint.

Seeing a room full of middle-aged women with their hair teased to the moon and balding men with bad toupees getting blissfully stoned is a sight to behold.

Back at the parent's home with new friends they met at the S.P.F.C. meeting, a strip-poker game breaks out…but the runaway daughter comes home and catches them. Whew! That's a lot of stuff going on.

Look for familiar 1970s faces: Georgia Engel (The Mary Tyler-Moore Show), Audra Lindley (Mrs. Roper on Three's Company) and Paul Benedict (the neighbor on The Jeffersons). During the singing auditions we see a very young Carly Simon and Bobo Bates (later to become Kathy Bates). There's also lots of classic early 1970s clothing, haircuts, home furnishings (green couch and large ugly lamps) and wood paneling, etc. Lynn Carlin, Buck Henry, Georgia Engel.

U.S. educational short. Bunny is a young college girl who is estranged from her mother and lives in a house with other girls and smokes pot for fun. She "raps" about her drug use, why she does it and how it affects her lifestyle, ambitions and self-perception.

Bunny has that late 60s mod "Yardley" look. She and her hot girlfriends smoke a joint, drink cheap wine and act silly. She also digs Psilocybin and Mescaline especially the way colors look. Actually everything is a lot better, she says, when you're stoned.
