THE WILD AND THE WILLING (a.k.a YOUNG AND WILLING) 1962
U.K. film. A study of student relationships (drinking, dancing and meeting girls) at Kilminster University in England. It's the early 1960s and the first wave of baby-boomers are coming-of-age. A diverse mix of social classes try to find their place in the modern world. Look for very early screen performances by Ian McShane and John Hurt.

Harry, a scholarship student from a working-class background, defends the working class to his posh fellow students by saying, "The H-Bomb is without class distinction." Harry's father and brother work in a foundry. He sums up his situation by saying, "I'm the one with brains and with a degree I'll sit on my ass and sweat half as much for twice the pay." But he wonders, "What is education doing for us anyway?" The students spend a lot of time drinking at a local pub called, "The Labour in Vain."

Professor Chown hosts a cocktail party for the students where he talks about the working class as if they are specimens on a microscope slide. Meanwhile the professor's wife, Virginia, drinks in the afternoons and makes passes at the students. Harry and Virginia drink whiskey out of the bottle and begin an affair. Her husband doesn't seem to care about her discretions.

A group of students go to a jazz club where we see them drop coins into a Seeburg 220 stereo jukebox and a Shadows-esque instrumental comes rocking out. There's also live Trad Jazz music by The Mike Cotton Jazzmen. The whole joint is jiving.

In the end Harry falls in love with Virginia, she rejects him, in frustration he pulls a stupid stunt, as a result a meek student dies tragically, Harry gets expelled and we wonder if anyone leaned anything at all. Virginia Maskell, Paul Rogers, Ian McShane, Samantha Eggar, Katherine Woodville, David Sumner, John Hurt, John Standing, Johnny Briggs, Johnny Sekka, Jeremy Brett, The Mike Cotton Jazzmen. The Wild and the Willing.
