THE PURSUIT OF HAPPINESS 1971
U.S. film. A thinking man's late 60s youth-culture film. William (Michael Sarrazin) and his girlfriend Jane (Barbara Hershey) share a groovy NYC apartment decorated with Dylan, Zappa and Woodstock posters. Jane is Jewish and a university campus activist. William comes from a wealthy Darien, Connecticut family but turns his back on the privileges of wealth –- and even the ideals of the hippie, youth culture movement as he tries to decide what he wants out of life.

William's life changes when on a rainy evening he accidentally runs over and kills an elderly woman. He is sent to prison but at a hearing he manages to escape out a bathroom window. He visits his wealthy grandmother to ask for money so he can go on the run with his girlfriend. His grandmother is a cranky racist wasp and warns him of the fiendish intentions of the Catholics, Jews and blacks and threatens to cut him out of her will.

William and Jane spend a peaceful week hiding out in the woods before they make their big escape and become fugitives. Randy Newman sings the opening song, "The Pursuit of Happiness."
