IDOL ON PARADE (a.k.a. IDLE ON PARADE) 1959
U.K. film. Letterbox. Inspired by Elvis Presley's army induction, "Idol on Parade" is the story of rock and roll star "Jeep Jackson" who, while riding high on the crest of fame, suddenly finds himself drafted into the British army. Jeep's unconventional ways create havoc within the ranks and don't win him any points with his disapproving commanding officer, but they do draw the attentions of his daughter.

Jeep Jackson's manager doesn't want his client's fame to fade, (or his 10% cut!), so Jeep is smuggled out of the barracks at different times to perform and record new songs. At one midnight performance a group of teddy boys start a fight and the entire theater erupts into a rumble. Jeep takes his Hofner 6-string and bashes a teddy boy in the head. Jeep makes an even bigger mistake by falling for his commanding officer's daughter.

Some of the songs are loaded with echo and have a rockabilly twinge to them. Anthony Newley found himself transformed from British supporting actor to singing matinee idol almost overnight thanks to this Albert Broccoli-produced musical comedy. Songs include: "Sat'day Night Rock-A-Boogie," "Idle on Parade," "Idle Rock-A-Boogie," "I've Waited So Long," and "Won't Get No Promotion."

Anthony Newley, William Bendix, Anne Aubrey, Sid James, Lionel Jeffries, David Lodge, Dilys Laye, William Kendall, Bernie Winters, Harry Fowler, Norman Atkyns, Percy Herbert. "Idol on Parade"

Who actually sang the songs in this movie? Review by MD MOM

Listening to Jackson's singing, his voice sounds too much like Elvis Presley to me. Knowing that the stars in movies rarely sang with their actual voices, someone else voice was perhaps "dubbed-in" and NOT provided any credit . . . common practice even today. Regardless, either this was perhaps an undisclosed voice of Elvis or a very good parody of him . . . who cares? LOL! ;)

[From Video Beat: It's Anthony Newley singing... he was trying to sound like Elvis!]
