STRANGERS IN THE CITY 1962
U.S. film. Wow. This film packs a realistic wallop. Filmed in Harlem and Coney Island it tells the story of a Puerto Rican family newly arrived to America in search of a better life. No way, Jose. The family settles in "El Barrio," the ghetto of Spanish Harlem, and live in a one-room, rat-infested tenement.

Tragedy piles upon on tragedy for each member of the impoverished family, first the father, then teenage daughter, then teenage son and finally the mother. We witness them being chewed up and spit out in the harsh melting pot that was late 50's to early 60's New York City.

The teenage son, a nice boy, is regularly beaten by a gang, loses his job, and is criticized by the father for not fighting back. The teenage daughter, a dark, innocent beauty, is attacked by her employer. Later she is led into prostitution and, in a final, lurid climax, the mother stabs her attacker. Then the mother is accidentally killed by her husband after which he commits suicide. Are we having fun yet?

This film is powerful in its realism and documentary style. Robert Gentile, Camilo Delgado, Rosita De Triano, Greta Margos, Robert Corso, Bob O'Connell, John Roeburt, Reni Santoni, Joseph Quinonis, Andres Santiago, William Torres. Strangers In The City.

Plus this bonus selection...

TEENAGERS ON TRIAL 1955
U.S. short film. Suburban teenage gangs knock children off their bikes and steal them. Other teens break windows for fun. A "nice" girl shoplifts. Bad boys steal cars. Teenage teenagers travel to outlying towns to go to honky tonks where the bartenders turn a blind eye to the legal drinking age.
