HELL DRIVERS 1957
U.K. film. Cool "speed" movie set in a dirty, low-down, road haulage truck yard. The crooked hauling company forces its drivers to maintain death-defying driving speeds in decrepit trucks down potholed country roads in order keep their jobs. Those who drive the fastest are given bonuses and the driver who makes the most hauls in one day receives a trophy.

The film is rich in testosterone as these working-class brutes drive recklessly while trying to run each other off the road. The seedy truck yard and exciting speed scenes are punctuated only by a greasy spoon café, a run-down guesthouse and a tawdry local sock hop (look for Sean Connery jitterbugging with Jill Ireland), where the drivers vent their bottled-up aggression on the boyfriends of the local women. It is a supremely macho film—a study of male aggression and rivalry.

For truck geeks, look for Dodge Semi Forwards with Perkins diesel engines. Excellent black and white photography.

Stanley Baker, Peggy Cummins, Patrick McGoohan, David McCallum, Jill Ireland, Sean Connery, Herbert Lom, William Hartnell, Wilfrid Lawson, Sid James, Alfie Bass, Gordon Jackson.

Bonus Selection: 1950s TV commercials.
