CINCINNATI POP FESTIVAL 1970
U.S. film. A "Happening for the New Generation." On June 13, 1970 in Cincinnati, Ohio at Crosley Field, "Home of the Cincinnati Reds," the Cincinnati Pop Festival, "Midsummers Rock" featured Grand Funk Railroad, Mountain, Iggy Pop and the Stooges, Alice Cooper, and Traffic with Steve Winwood.

Take a trip back to the early days of "rock festivals" where indulgent drum and guitar solos ruled world and the concert sound systems weren't very good. Ah, but the drugs were plentiful! This televised concert was hosted by the very straight Jack Lescoulie who provides play-by-play commentary. San Francisco reporter Gary Schaefer interviews stoners in audience. In 1970 the guitar effects were pretty crude!

Highlights are the amazingly punk Iggy Pop. Wow! Iggy crowd surfs and when an audience member offers a jar of peanut butter, Iggy smears it all over his chest and tosses chunks into the crowd. Also, a very psychedelic Alice Cooper gets a pineapple upside cake thrown into his face while he tries to hypnotize the crowd by swinging a pocket watch back and forth. NOTE: There is an on-screen counter that sometimes gets in the way. Bummer.

Songs include: Grand Funk Railroad: "Drum Solo," "T.N.U.C.," "Inside Looking Out." Mountain: "Theme from an Imaginary Western," "Guitar Solo," "Dreams Of Milk and Honey." Alice Cooper: "Black Juju." Iggy Pop and the Stooges: "TVEye," "1970," "Feel Alright." Traffic: "John Barleycorn," "Pearly Queen," "Stranger to Himself."

Plus this bonus selection...

SOMETHING ELSE 1971
U.S. TV show. May-19-71. Episode 22. Something Else was a short-lived, syndicated, half-hour variety series, filmed in various locations across the U.S., featuring then-popular (and some unknown) rock and folk artists lip-synching to some of their well-known hits. From Malibu Beach, host John Byner introduces musical artists and interjects comic bits into the proceedings. Artists: The Blues Image: "Ride Captain Ride." Smith: "Feel The Magic," and "What Am I Gonna Do." Shocking Blue: "Venus."

I thought the footage of Alice Cooper was priceless. Seeing a fan throw a pineapple upside-down cake right into his face is quite a sight. I've seen Alice Cooper interviews where he laughs and talks about this concert and said he deserved to get caked in the face. And Iggy smearing himself with peanut butter ain’t too shabby either.

The audience and TV commentator footage is also a sight to behold. Roll 'em if you got 'em and blast off to the heyday of the outdoor rock n roll festival concert.

I mostly bought this video to see the Alice Cooper footage, which turned out to be a little disappointing, but overall the film is great! It brings back tons of memories from the real hippy scene. Not the hollywood stuff. It reminded me of all the concerts I attended during that era in Orlando Florida, when you paid $4 to see a show like this. The only thing missing from this is a psychedelic light show. But if you like early 70's hard rock, you'll love this.
