AMERICAN HOT WAX 1978
U.S. film. Excellent quality. 16:9 Letterbox. Fantastic tribute to 1950s doo wop and rock 'n' roll and the important contribution of disc jockey Alan Freed. Not historically accurate, but who cares!? The music and attitude are perfect.

Terrific cast and performances by original 1950s rock & roll stars including Chuck Berry, Jerry Lee Lewis, Screamin' Jay Hawkins, and Frankie Ford. Kenny Vance and the Planotones. Many wonderful scenes including "Come Go With Me" being recorded, "Tweedlee Dee" being auditioned by "Laverne" in front of Alan Freed, a big rock 'n' roll show at the Brooklyn Paramount and many others.

Excellent soundtrack! Chuck Berry: "Sweet Little Sixteen," "Reelin' and Rockin'," "Roll Over Beethoven." Frankie Ford: "Sea Cruise." Jerry Lee Lewis: "Great Balls of Fire," "Whole Lotta Shakin' "Goin On." Screamin' Jay Hawkins: "I Put A Spell On You." The Elegants: "Little Star." The Del Vikings: "Whispering Bells." The Mystics: "Hushabye." Sammy Turner: "Lavender Blue." The Moonglows: "Sincerely." The Coasters: "Charlie Brown." Bobby Darin: "Splish Splash." The Drifters: "There Goes My Baby." Jackie Wilson: "Lonely Teardrops." Johnny Otis: "Willie and the Hand Jive." Ritchie Valens: "La Bamba."

The Heartbeats: "A Thousand Miles Away." The Everly Brothers: "Bye Bye Love." Bill Doggett: "Honky Tonk Part 2." The Dominoes: "Sixty Minute Man." Buddy Holly: "Oh Boy!" "Rave On." Tommy Edwards: "It's All in the Game." The Diamonds: "Little Darlin'." The Cadillacs: "Zoom." Little Richard: "Tutti Frutti." Maurice Williams and The Zodiacs: "Stay." Eddie Cochran: "Summertime Blues." Timmy and the Tangerine: "Mister Blue." The Delights: "Mr. Lee," "Maybe." Kenny Vance and The Planotones: "Rock and Roll Is Here to Stay," "Come Go With Me." The Chesterfields: "Why Do Fools Fall in Love?"

Tim McIntire, Fran Drescher, Jay Leno, Laraine Newman, Jeff Altman, Melanie Chartoff, Richard Perry, Artie Ripp, Wee Willie Davis, Hamilton Camp, Cameron Crowe, Chuck Berry, Jerry Lee Lewis, Frankie Ford, Screamin' Jay Hawkins. American Hot Wax DVD.

Plus this bonus selection...

Great Movie and Quality Review by Michael

The picture quality was far better than I expected. Outstanding! This film is a quick snap shot of Alan Freed and the Rock and Roll Music business happening during the mid to late fifties (until payola hit). The film gives you a taste of everything in about an hour and half. Tim McIntire is great as Alan Freed. Even the real life Chuck Berry, Jerry Lee Lewis and Frankie Ford. A must have film. Thank you! fantastic movie and excellent quality Review by Rockin' Ron

The movie is definitely the best around on Rock & Roll and Doo Wop. It's almost a documentary. I saw the movie when it came out and always wanted to have it but no DVD was ever available. Congratulations on what you succeeded. A superb edition. Only one critic: the bonus material is not very good quality: it would have been better not to include them (Cadillacs) Now I'm afraid that the extras on other DVDs are as bad as these.

NOTE FROM THE VIDEO BEAT: I'm glad you enjoyed American Hot Wax -- it's one of my favorites. The bonus material is SUPER RARE footage shot on home movies in the 1950s of the Cadillacs performing at what looks like a high school gymnasium. You can hear the voices of the kids in the audience. It's actually a rare and wonderful piece of rock 'n' roll history. The quality is not representative of all other bonus selectons. (Posted on 5/30/14)

I bought a copy of American Hot Wax on eBay for my husband. It was advertised as "factory sealed new" but it was just a copy made from TV. I tried the video beat and the quality was better and there were extras on the disc. Very satisfied. We're bought several others and they've all been great. Thanks VideoBeat! (Posted on 4/5/14)

I disagree with other reviewer who did not give this movie 5 Stars across the board. The music kicks @ss and the fun doesn't stop! I've already watched it three times and I just got it a couple of weeks ago. If you like 50s rock and roll, or simply fun movies, American Hot Wax fits the bill. (Posted on 10/28/11)

The delivery was quick and I was hoping for OK picture quality but this DVD is excellent! And as for the movie itself, well, I grew up listening to Alan Freed so Tim McIntire's sympathetic portrayal really resonates with me. His strong performance fuses together what would otherwise be a loose fragmented story and collection of characters into a stylish and poignant vision of an America on the brink of Rock & Roll. I've been waiting a long time for this movie to become available on DVD so thanks Video Beat, you didn't disappoint. (Posted on 6/22/11)
