CELEBRATION AT BIG SUR 1969
U.S. film. Just one month after Woodstock, this sixth annual Big Sur Folk festival was filmed September 13-14, 1969 and released in theaters in 1971. Concert tickets cost $4.00 per day. Note: this DVD version is presented in the original-filmed screen format, not stretched and distorted for widescreen televisions.

Joints are passed and the hippie vibe is flowing, except for a shoving match between a loudmouth heckler and Stephen Stills, whose inner redneck is on display.

Artists and Songs: Crosby, Stills, Nash & Young: "Sea Of Madness," "Down By The River." Stephen Stills: "4 + 20." John Sebastian: "Rainbows All Over Your Blues." John Sebastian with Stephen Stills: "Mobile Line," "Red-Eye Express." Joan Baez: "I Shall Be Released," "A Song For David," Sweet Sir Galahad."

Joni Mitchell: "Woodstock." Joni Mitchell, Crosby, Stills & Nash, John Sebastian: "Get Together." Dorothy Morrison & The Combs Sisters: "All God's Children Got Soul," "Put A Little Love In Your Heart." Mimi Faria and Julie Payne with Stephen Stills: "Changes, Circles Spinning." Carol Ann Cisneros: "Malaguena Salerosa." The Struggle Mountain Resistance Band: "Rise, Shine, And Give God The Glory." Joan Baez with Dorothy Morrison & The Combs Sisters: "Oh Happy Day." Various Artists: "Swing Down Sweet Chariot."

Plus this bonus selection...

WHAT'S HAPPENING IN THE HAIGHT 1972
U.S. TV documentary. "A report from the Neighborhood" looks at how political, social and business interests in San Francisco's Haight Ashbury neighborhood have changed since the late 1960s. Interviews with local residents, shopkeepers, policemen, people on the street, and more. The runaways, hard drugs and bikers of the 1968-69 era have given way to a more peaceful hippie, communal vibe.

As long as you're not too hung up on perfect hi-fi sound this is a fun festival film. The "high light" for me is Joni's "Woodstock" which is accompanied by plenty of double exposures and solarized effects making it a hypnotically psychedelic segment. This is a relatively small gathering which showcases the intimacy between the performers and the audience making it unique compared to most of the festival films out there that I've seen.
