GREENWICH VILLAGE STORY 1963
U.S. film. Excellent quality. Widescreen. New York City bohemians struggle to come to terms with their beatnik lifestyles and growing up. Terrific early 60s Greenwich Village filming locations include: Gaslight Café, MacDougal Street, West 4th Street, Bleecker and MacDougal, Café Borgia and Le Figaro Café.

Cool footage of a crowded Washington Square Park, complete with impromptu hootenanny sessions and outdoor art exhibits. Life classes with serious students taking themselves seriously; beatnik poets reciting by candlelight; and a collection of extroverts, introverts and perverts. Crashpad parties, deep conversations, guitar playing and singing. Also footage of the Berkshires and Lake Garfield.

A talented ballet dancer becomes pregnant by her underachieving, would-be novelist boyfriend. She decides to stay with him instead of joining a touring ballet company; meanwhile the boyfriend's novel is rejected so he splits with a former girlfriend, an older society woman who slums on the periphery of the beatnik scene. While the pregnant ballet dancer sells an expensive brooch to raise funds for an abortion, the underachiever novelist considers a career on Madison Avenue.

James Frawley, who directed many episodes of The Monkees, plays a very earnest bohemian beat. Robert Hogan, Melinda Plank, Tani Seitz, James Frawley, Sunja Svendsen, James Cresson, Aaron Banks, John Avildsen.

Plus this bonus selection...

BEATNIK MAGOO 1960
U.S. Cartoon. Mr. Magoo. Two beatniks living in a building undergoing demolition are inadvertently saved by Magoo who mistakenly thinks he's wandered onto a cruise ship. Hip beatnik lingo.

What a terrific experience watching this film. I moved to the Village in the early 1960s and remember the Bleeker and MacDougal, and West Village scene as shown in this film. The black and white photography is perfect. Very satisfied customer.
