U.K. TV. From the Scene at 6:30. Mar-7-67. Complete. Uncut. An examination of the emerging London underground psychedelic movement that pre-dates San Francisco's "Summer of Love" by six months.

Several segments feature Paul McCartney talking about the underground scene, what it means, and why the older generation shouldn't fear it. John "Hoppy" Hopkins, well-known figure from Swinging London's underground, leads a "Pot is Fun" happening in Piccadilly Circus.  Poetry readings at the Royal Albert Hall by poets Allen Ginsberg, Adrian Mitchell, Lawrence Ferlinghetti, Gregory Corso and others.

Segment on the Indica book store, gallery, and publisher of the International Times underground newspaper. Indica served as ground zero for the counterculture scene. (The Indica was co-owned by John Dunbar, Peter Asher and Barry Miles. It was supported by Paul McCartney and hosted a show of Yoko Ono's work in November 1966 where she and John Lennon first met.)

Look for footage of Pink Floyd, filmed for the first time (Jan-27-67), at the legendary UFO Club playing "Interstellar Overdrive" and a rough version of "Matilda Mother" (then known as "Percy The Ratcatcher").

WHAT IS A HAPPENING? 1967
U.K. TV documentary. May-17-67. A look at the Apr-26-67, 14-Hour Technicolor Dream held in Alexandra Palace, London which was a blend of LSD, performance art, poetry and psychedelic rock music. Terrific footage of this "Be-In" event. The London hippie scene-philosophy held many of the same beliefs as the California scene, except they dressed a bit more stylish!

The Exploding Galaxy Dance Company perform while "Tomorrow Never Knows" radiates from the sound system. Yoko Ono is seen during the performance of, "A Pretty Girl is Like a Manifesto" in which volunteers take a pair scissors and clip a pretty girl's clothing piece by piece. A group called "The Flies" play, "Purple Haze" while go-go girls gyrate on stage. A lot of way-out, bizarre happenings! An interview with a Teddy Boy who says he's having a terrible time because he doesn't "get it!"

A WHOLE SCENE GOING 1966
U.K. Youth culture & music TV show. Jun-8-66. Co-hosted by Barry Fantoni and Wendy Varnals. The Yardbirds perform, "Over, Under, Sideways, Down." The Kinks perform, "Sunny Afternoon." Dave Dee, Dozy, Beaky, Mick and Tich perform, "Hideaway." Ray Nance sings, "Lady Be Good." Ravi Shankar performs a raga and talks about Indian "pop" music and takes questions from the audience including members of the Yardbirds. Dave Dee, Dozy, Beaky, Mick, tour Paris and talk about Parisian lifestyles. Charlton Heston is on the hot seat and interviewed (grilled) by the audience.
